Collection: Stuart Asprey - Featured Artist

Artist Statement:

As a creative product of my environment, I owe an extreme amount of gratitude to the power of observation: seeing things that others choose not to, looking in places that may not always be pleasant, and filling in the blanks in order to see the bigger picture. 

The ongoing series of drinking vessels combines the tradition of hand-painted graphic ceramics with a contemporary, quasi conceptual, hands-on approach to an atmospheric kiln experience.  The imagery references multiple aspects of merch art, popular culture and art history.  Personal inspiration comes from the timeless practice of folklore, the intimate details found in the natural sciences, and the vastness of human geography.   The homage to atmospheric firing is executed through the mysterious “Montana Airbrush” technique.  A systematic pre-bisque process that allows the artist to control the application and placement of the atmosphere with a full spectrum of colors that are rarely available in conventional kilns such as wood, soda, or salt.

Bio: 

Stuart Asprey is an artist and educator based in Norman, Oklahoma.  He has participated in over 150 art exhibits in 30 states and 5 countries.  He has taught over 25 workshops at numerous art centers, museums, and universities.  Stuart is a Full Professor of Ceramics and the School of Visual Arts Undergraduate Coordinator at the University of Oklahoma where he has worked for the past 14 years. While at OU he was the first visual art professor to receive the Arts & Humanities Faculty Fellowship and has received numerous other grants for his teaching interests, creative activity and scholarly pursuits.
