Artist Statement:
From a current body of sculptural work.
To free fall….
Terror as the world zooms past, plummeting towards inevitable pain and death. Twirling in the chaos.
Eyes closed, turned inward, being present, feeling the peace of floating, not falling. Listening to the deep calming silence inside.
Eyes open, scanning the horizon, reaching, touching, connecting, with the bodies falling with you.
Repeat.
I fling my body around the yard, snapping pictures, trying to capture the terror, peace, and connection of falling through life. I am firmly planted to the ground with gravity, but in snapshots of genderless silhouettes, I see the weightlessness, the connection, the love, the beauty, the sadness, the inevitability of death that binds us all together.
Bio:
Patty Bilbro has been working in clay for over 30 years with an Associates Degree in clay production from Haywood community Craft School, and a Masters Certificate in Ceramics from Hood college. She has been a resident artist of Odyssey Center in Asheville, NC and Baltimore Clayworks in Baltimore Maryland. She creates both functional and non-functional work utilizing wheel thrown and hand built forms with geometric patterns and free form illustration. “I strive to allow my work to grow and change as I do, creating bodies of work that are reflective of the time and space that I inhabit.”
Patty currently lives and works in Madrid, NM where she has daily conversations with the crows. She plays, creates, and meanders through the desert as much as she can. Her current body of work has expanded to include experimental films, installations, and performance in addition to her ceramic work.
