Jamie Bates Slone is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at the University of Oklahoma. She received her MFA from the University of Kansas and her BFA from the University of Central Missouri. Her current work explores the complexities of mental health in relation to her personal experiences with depression and anxiety.

Artist Statement:

Through conjured memory, I revisit my struggles with depression and anxiety. This type of reflection has formed the conceptual basis of my creative work. By using the figure as a metaphor, I am able to convey the sentiments often correlated with disease and disorder. My surface choices are based on color psychology with the intent for one to imagine the surface of the skin as a manifestation of what is happening inside the body and mind.

In my studio practice, anxieties about my own physical and mental health and obsessions with mortality manifest themselves in the choice of scale, charged surface, and uneasy body language within the figures. These are ideas that are continuously shifting and evolving as I further explore the complexities of mental health. As I begin to better understand my illness, I feel compelled to advocate for others who struggle with their own. I find strength in knowing that my work has meaning beyond my own healing.
