The smartphone is an intimate object that opens up to global culture. I explore how digital technology influences our daily lives and perceptions of ourselves. Selfie culture is an interesting phenomena as self portraiture has been in the art history canon for centuries, however our 21st Century culture has developed it into the mainstream where non-artisans create and express themselves by sharing images every second of every day. I have noticed a trend where people are taking selfies in front of mirrors and blocking their faces with their smartphone; rendering themselves anonymous. Sharing anonymous selfies seems to be an oxymoron and I am fascinated by what drives this practice.

I use blue-and-white aesthetics to root my work in a historic practice as porcelain traditionally documents people in the era in which the art was made. There are also parallels with material as cobalt (what makes blue in ceramics) is found in smartphone batteries.
